Turkey is a unitary parliamentary republican democracy. It is currently ruled by the AKP (Justice and Development Party) which has been in power since 2002. The leader of the party, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, is also the president of Turkey. The government follows a presidential system with an executive branch consisting of the President, Prime Minister and cabinet ministers who are all responsible to the Parliament. The legislative branch consists of 550 members of Parliament who are elected by popular vote every five years. The judicial branch is independent and includes a Constitutional Court, Supreme Court and Council of State. Turkey has a multiparty system and its political parties are known for their ideological diversity ranging from centre-right to far-left. In terms of foreign policy, Turkey follows a pro-Western stance and has been a member of NATO since 1952.
