All landline numbers in Palau are 8 digits long, with the first two digits representing the state’s respective area code. Mobile phone numbers in Palau are 11 digits long, with the first four digits representing the service provider’s respective network code. In addition to assigning landline and mobile phone numbers, Palauan government also assigns special three-digit codes for various services such as emergency services, public utilities, government agencies, etc. For example, 112 is reserved for emergency services while 811 is reserved for public utilities such as electricity and water supply companies. Similarly, 901 is used by government agencies while 801 is used by non-governmental organizations (NGOs). These special codes can be used nationwide regardless of a person’s location or state within Palau. Palau is a presidential republic with a unicameral legislature. It is divided into 16 states and has a president and vice president who are elected by popular vote. The president serves as the head of state, while the vice president serves as the head of government. The legislative branch of government is composed of members elected to four-year terms. The judicial system consists of the Supreme Court and district courts. Palau has no political parties; instead, candidates run for office on a nonpartisan basis. The government is committed to maintaining peace, security, and stability in the nation, and it has signed agreements with other countries to promote international cooperation and mutual understanding. In addition, Palau has ratified several international treaties, including those related to human rights, labor rights, nuclear disarmament, and environmental protection.
