The judicial branch includes the Supreme Court, which is headed by a Chief Justice appointed by the President with the advice and consent of Congress. The Judicial Branch also includes seven district courts, one in each state, with three justices appointed to each court. Political parties in Micronesia are relatively weak, and many candidates run as independents in elections. There are no formal political parties at the national level, although some states have regional political parties that nominate candidates for state and national elections.
