Malawi’s government is a multi-party democracy led by President Lazarus Chakwera who was elected in 2020 after defeating long-time leader Peter Mutharika in a rerun presidential election. The country has been slowly transitioning from an authoritarian regime to a democratic society since 1994 when it held its first multiparty elections. Despite economic challenges, Malawians are resilient and determined to build a better future for themselves and their children through improved education systems and job opportunities for youth. Malawi is a multi-party democracy with a president as the head of state. The president is elected by popular vote, and serves a five-year term. The government is divided into three branches: Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. The executive branch consists of the President, Vice-President, and Cabinet Ministers who are appointed by the President. The legislative branch is made up of 193 members in the National Assembly who are elected through universal adult suffrage. Finally, the judicial branch is comprised of the High Court, Magistrates’ Courts, and Local Courts that are responsible for administering justice in Malawi.
