Ethiopia. According to CountryAAH, the total population in Ethiopia is 114,963,599 people in 2020. Riots in the state of Gambela in western Ethiopia in January officially demanded close to 200 deaths. Parliament set up a commission to investigate the clashes between the local Anuak community and the miners who moved in from other parts of the country. The fighting began as early as December 2003, when at least 57 people were killed.

Due to the almost permanently crisis-dependent state of supply, the government began in February to move people from the depleted highlands to more fertile areas. Within a three-year period, up to 2 million people should have been moved. Humanitarian organizations agree that a relocation under orderly forms is necessary, to avoid a spontaneous mass escape to the cities, but warns that poor planning can cause severe hardship. In the areas where the new settlements are planned, preferably along the border with Sudan, the sanitary conditions are poor and the risk of communicable diseases is great. The government stated in August that more than 7.6 million residents were in need of food aid and warned that the number would probably increase significantly in 2005.

Tigray stops Abiy’s general

October 30

The Tigray government is stopping a general whom Prime Minister Abiy wants to place in the state from taking his position. The state government says Abiy no longer has the authority to make such appointments. The general is forced to fly back to Addis Ababa. There are reports that the Abiy government is sending troops to the border with Tigray to secure the large military assets there. Tensions between Tigray and Addis Ababa are rising further.

Ethiopia accuses Trump of war

October 24

Ethiopia accuses US President Donald Trump of inciting war between Egypt and Ethiopia. The accusation is leveled against Trump after he criticized Ethiopia’s construction of the Renaissance dam and said that Egypt must do something about it. Trump says Egypt could destroy the dam. Ethiopia summons the US Ambassador to Ethiopia for an explanation. Trump speaks in connection with a ceremony in the White House that marks the normalization of relations between Israel and Sudan. Sudan is also in conflict with Ethiopia if the dam that Egypt and Sudan fear will reduce the flow of water downstream in the Nile, water on which both countries depend. Ethiopia usually has good relations with the United States.

Tensions are rising between Tigray and Addis Ababa

October 9

The upper house of the federal parliament decides that federal representatives should break all contacts with the TPLF leaders in Tigray as a result of the state holding a regional election (see September 2020) despite the Abiy government declaring the election illegal. The TPLF has 189 of 190 seats in the state assembly. The central government will instead cooperate directly with the local authorities in Tigray and thus circumvent the state government. The TPLF government in Tigray replies that it will withhold the taxes that the state collects for the central government.
