The total population in Saint Vincent and Grenadines is 110,951 people in 2020. In 1983, the Cato government decided to support the United States invasion of neighboring Grenada, and even sent a symbolic police force. Cato postponed elections ahead of time, but the economic crisis caused voters to orient themselves towards the conservative New Democratic Party (NDP), and James Mitchell was elected new prime minister.
At the May 16, 1989 election, the NDP won again and Mitchell was re-elected. In 1990, he signed with the Prime Ministers of Dominica, St. Lucia and Grenada an agreement to create a federation to unite the four countries (see Dominica).
In February 1992, the country joined the Tlatelolco Treaty, which prohibits the deployment of nuclear weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Faced with the abolitionist tendencies of the Grenadines, which came out violently in 1980, Mitchell set up a Grenadine affairs ministry and appointed Grenadier Herbert Young as Foreign Minister.
The SVLP got only 3 out of the 15 seats in parliament at the February 1994 elections. The NDP took over the government. In August, Mitchel was accused of being unable to reasonably fight the economic crisis, and in particular the consequences of the fall in banana prices. A product that represents 80% of the country’s total export revenue.
